Why My Kids Need an Eye Exam

It’s time for back-to-school. Parents are busy getting school supplies, outfits, backpacks, etc.

What about your child’s eye exam? Clear, comfortable vision is essential for success in school. Experts say over 80% of what we learn comes through our eyes. Continue reading below for some helpful information on vision and learning…

Common Symptoms of Vision Problems in Children

Poor vision and eye strain can cause a number of symptoms in children. Below are some of the most common ones:

  • Blurred vision when viewing either distant or near objects

  • Headaches around the eyes, forehead, and base of the neck

  • Squinting or furrowing of brow

  • Moving phone, tablet, or book closer or farther away to read

  • Lack of concentration or reduced concentration

  • Looking back and forth between different objects

Your Child Thinks Everyone Sees Like They Do

Children do not compare their vision with others like adults. For example, if you are driving down the road and believe your vision is blurry, you will ask someone else if they can see a sign clearly. Kids do not do this. They will assume everyone else sees the same as they do.

Exposure to Blue Light Can Adversely Affect Vision Performance

There is increased evidence that exposure to the blue light radiated from monitors and touch screens can affect vision. This usually leads to eye fatigue, headaches, and other symptoms of eye strain.

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) is Often Undetected

Amblyopia, commonly known as “lazy eye”, is when one eye does not see clearly. This is typically caused by the two eyes having much different prescriptions. This causes the brain to have to choose one image and suppress the other one. While there is help for this, the earlier this condition is discovered the easier it is to help.
