Workplace Eye Safety Tips From Your Local Optometrists

Eye injuries at work are very common. In fact, it's estimated that over 2,000 people injure their eyes in the workplace each day. At Moody Eyes, our Indianapolis optometrists know that almost all workplace eye injuries can be prevented by using the right eye safety equipment. The type of injuries may vary, but the solution doesn't. Preventative care will almost always protect your eyes from harm.

Physical Injuries

Some of the most common and serious eye injuries are those caused by physical objects. Things that fly into eyes can cause permanent damage and even blindness. Some of the most common are:

  • Small flying objects like glass or metal
  • Tools
  • Chemicals
  • Dust-like substances such as sawdust or metal shavings
  • Chemicals splashing or misting

All of the injuries caused by these objects can be prevented by wearing safety glasses. Our eye doctors can make prescription safety glasses, no matter what your vision correction needs. This ensures that you see well on the job.

Blue Light Blocking Lenses for Eye Safety

People who work indoors face a different type of danger for eye injuries: computer vision syndrome. Computer screens emit a light in the cooler blue end of the spectrum, which can cause serious damage over time. Blue light can cause insomnia, has been linked to depression, and can even lead to cataracts or macular degeneration. Blue light damage is cumulative, which means it adds up over time, making it even more important to prevent exposure on an ongoing basis. Your best protection from blue light is a good pair of eyeglasses with blue light blocking lenses. We can add a blue light preventative coating to your normal eyeglasses. Contact lens wearers can get clear lenses with the same coating. Wear your protective eyeglasses every time you use the computer, for the best workplace protection.

UV Damage Outdoors

For those who work outdoors, the main danger to the eyes comes from UVA and UVB rays. Both types of UV light are in sunlight, but long exposure to these rays has been linked to macular degeneration, cataracts and even photokeratitis, which can cause temporary blindness. The simple fix for UV exposure is to wear sunglasses that protect your eyes from 100 percent of all UVA and UVB exposure. We offer a wide range of frame options, from sporty and decorative to professional and subtle, to fit in with your daily work life.

Testimonial

Very, very satisfied with my visit! I recently moved to Indianapolis and needed to get some new glasses and try contacts for the first time. The office was easy to make appointments with, and the doctor (Amy) was EXTREMELY friendly and knowledgeable. I was able to get the contacts I needed, as well as lenses put into a pair of glasses I purchased online. -- All at an affordable price.
