Eye Care Guide: Six Easy-to-Do Tips on Maintaining Your Eyesight
Wear Sunglasses

One of the best things you can do for your eyes is to always wear sunglasses when you go outside. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can do a lot of damage to your eyes and even increase the risk of eye diseases, like cataracts. Putting on sunglasses with UV protection, even on cloudy days, can protect your eyes from damage.

Eat a Healthy Diet

A nutritious diet isn’t just beneficial for your waistline; it is also good for your eyes. To preserve your eyesight as long as possible, make sure to include lutein, zinc and omega3 fatty acids in your diet. Good sources of these nutrients include spinach, salmon, eggs and nuts.

Put Down the Cigarettes

If you need another reason to quit smoking, know that it can help with your eyesight. Smoking robs your eyes of the nutrients they need. When you smoke tobacco, it can lead to optic nerve damage, macular degeneration and cataracts.

Visit an Eye Doctor Regularly

Another important part of eye care in Indianapolis is getting an eye exam at least once a year. During one of these exams, an eye doctor will check your eyes for any problems. If he finds something wrong with your eyes, he can treat it before it gets worse.

Take a Break from the Computer

If you are required to be in front of a computer all day for your job, it can do a number on your eyes. Staring at a computer screen too long can lead to dry eyes, blurry vision and eye strain. It is a good idea to look away from the computer screen every 20 minutes for 20 seconds. Doing so will give your eyes a much needed break.

Wear Eye Protection When Necessary

It you work in an environment with hazardous materials, they can get in your eyes and cause a lot of damage. That is why you should always put eye goggles on beforehand.
