Why Does It Take Time For My Eyes To Adjust To A New Pair Of Eyeglasses?

Much like a new pair of shoes which can be a little uncomfortable until they're broken in, a new pair of eyeglasses can cause a bit of discomfort in the first few days.  This is because your eyes and brain must "learn" to process visual information under a new visual correction system.

Not everyone experiences this "adjustment" period, but for those of us who do, we may experience any number of symptoms that suggest our eyes (and brain) are working hard to adjust to this new view on life:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Eye strain
  • Blurry vision
  • Double vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Decreased peripheral vision

These symptoms are temporary and will go away once you've adjusted to your new prescription. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to call one of our eye doctors for some guidance.

Top Tips On Getting Used To Your New Eyeglasses

  • Wear your eyeglasses as much as possible in the first 48 hours after bringing them home. You should especially aim to put on your glasses first thing in the morning so your eyes have a greater amount of time to adjust.
  • If headaches or dizziness persist, remove your glasses until these symptoms go away.
  • Keep your eyeglasses clean using optometrist-approved cleaners and cloths, and be sure to store them correctly to protect the lenses.
  • When turning to look at something, try moving your entire head (not just your eyes). In the early days of eyeglasses use, this can help relieve strain on your eyes.

Testimonial

Very, very satisfied with my visit! I recently moved to Indianapolis and needed to get some new glasses and try contacts for the first time. The office was easy to make appointments with, and the doctor (Amy) was EXTREMELY friendly and knowledgeable. I was able to get the contacts I needed, as well as lenses put into a pair of glasses I purchased online. -- All at an affordable price.
